Worlds Loneliest tree records human epoch

The worlds loneliest tree, a Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) located on the remote Campbell Island in New Zealand is said to hold, within its heartwood a record of radiocarbon fallout from the aboveground nuclear testing that began in 1945. Shrubby plants on the island also retain this record, making it a truly global signal of human activity.
